Masterclasses in Animation ~ "The 12 Principles PLUS"
Attainable animation ~ taught in 2-hour Zoom classes over 12 weeks. (1 of 4 Modules.) Learn to animate with the core principles of movement. Then post your work to social media! Here are some of the things covered in "Module 01" - starting March 26th 2024...
The 12 principles of animation were first established by Disney legends, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston in their classic book, "The Illusion of Life" in 1981. However, current master animator, Tony White, believes that in this modern animation age, these are no longer complete. Tony raised this idea in his latest book - "ANIMATION MASTERCLASSES ~ from Pencils to Pixels" - and now he expands on this further through his new diploma program... "The 12 Principles ~ PLUS". This means students can learn to animate using the traditional 12 Principles - plus the new ones that Tony will include.** An additional, very exciting, factor to this program is that ALL exercises will be created in color, after which students will be able to post their work on social networks - through sites such as Instagram, TikTok, etc. - thus making this the most unique, 2D animation course for students ever!
** Tony covers all the original 12 Principles - as defined by Frank Thomas & Ollie Johnson... "Squash and stretch", "Anticipation", "Staging", "Straight-ahead action and pose-to-pose", "Follow through and overlapping action", "Slow in and slow out", "Arc", "Secondary action", "Timing", "Exaggeration", "Solid drawing", "Appeal". However, is will include "new ones", such as... "Balance", "Generic Walk", "Superimposition", etc. Note: The 12 Principles PLUS will not necessarily be taught in the order listed, but they will be entirely covered - more than once in some cases - by all exercises in Module 01 and Module 02 of Tony's program. All completed exercises can additionally be posted to 2D Academy's Instagram page - as well as to each student's own social media accounts. Modules 01 and 02 of this course are perfect for...
* Beginners who want to learn animation for the very first time. * College Students who want to supplement their studies with a real knowledge of movement. (Note: Although this course is NOT accredited at any degree level, it nevertheless teaches the "core principles of movement" in a more comprehensive and advanced way, when compared to many animation degree courses out there!) * Artists & Illustrators who want to know how to make their art move well. * Professionals who want to take their animation skills to the next level. "The 12 Principles PLUS" will be taught using hand-drawn 2D animation techniques - working with the "Rough Animator" software for Module 01 and the "Moho" rigged 2D software (working copy of "Debut" provided free) for Module 01. (Students can of course use any other animation technique they provide, as long as they can create videos from their work upon completion of each exercise.) Check out our course overview video here... Remote students welcome! Tony's classes are presented live on Zoom each week. But if you can't attend his live classes, then Tony will recorded them and make them available to you in a private online classroom. That way you will miss nothing of the instruction - as well as be able to easily share your course work and have it expertly critiqued by Tony. High school credit available:
Eligible high school students are able to acquire 1 Art credit for an art elective course by concurrently registering to this joint-course in conjunction with the Seattle Voctech School. www.seattlevt.com* Tony's young 2022 graduate students.
Your instructor, TONY WHITE:
It is said that a picture in worth a thousand word and an animated picture is worth 24 times that! Instructor Tony White's "2023 Showreel" will clearly demonstrate how amazingly qualified he is to teach these classes... The curriculum for each course module will be broken down as follows, although variations may occur, due to the requirements of each cohort... MODULE 01:
Starting October 24th, 2023: "Module 01" covers all of the core principles of animated movement, using drawn digital techniques. The software of choice is "Rough Animator" - however, students are free to use any animation approach they prefer, to complete the exercises. MODULE 01: WEEK-BY-WEEK CONTENT:
MODULE 02: Starting January 2024: "Module 02" covers further essential "core principles of movement" that every animator should know. Again, each student can choose their own animation approach to complete the exercises - but it will be demonstrated using rigged digital animation techniques, using the "MOHO" software. A 12-week Moho license is loaned to each student for this course to complete the exercises. (Although students should check it's compatibility to the hardware they are using.) (Note: This is NOT a Moho software training course - although the basics of operating Moho will be explained, so students can easily use the software for their required assignments.)
MODULE 03: Starting May 2024: Now students have learned how to animate, it is natural that they will now want to make their own short film. "Modules 03" therefore introduces students to the essential stages of Pre-producing a film - all the way through to a final Animatic, in preparation for finishing their film in Module 04.
MODULE 04***: Starting September 2024: Having completed all the stages of pre-production, students will learn in "Module 04" how to animate and complete their own short animated film. They will be personally mentored throughout on the finer points of animation execution and production by Tony. Finished films will be automatically entered into the "Junior Golden Pencil Awards" category at the "DRAWTASTIC Animation Festival".
*** Note: This schedule is based on a traditional 2D animation approach. However, it will vary and be tailored to individual needs, if students choose to use Moho or other animation production approaches.
