FESTIVAL HISTORY
Roy E. Disney opens the first-ever festival, large crowds at the Seattle IMAX, Tomm Moore & Ross Steward and Richard Williams.
The "DRAWTASTIC Animation festival" - formally known as the "2D OR NOT 2D Animation Festival" - began over a decade ago, at the Historic Theater in Everett, WA. It's mission was to establish a home and showcase for traditional 2D animation in the USA. The festival's inaugural event was opened by the late, great 2D animation advocate, Roy E. Disney. Roy charmed and inspired the audience with wonderful tales of his uncle Walt - and of the Disney studio where he was a chief executive at the time. The festival went from strength to strength, ultimately attracting guests from far and wide, to speak and present their work. Significant among these were Disney producer Don Hahn (twice, due to popular request), animation legend Richard Williams and twice Oscar nominated Irish director, Tomm Moore, who brought his art director colleague, Ross Stewart. The festival is now purely an online event, starting in 2018. That way we can reach a much larger, worldwide audience. It is believed that by doing this, the festival's tradition of awarding it's coveted "Golden Pencil Awards" to outstanding films (especially traditionally 2D animated films) will be more effective. Filmmakers wishing to enter their work for the 2019 event can submit via our dedicated FilmFreeway page. 2021 saw the DRAWTASTIC festival awarding it's first ever "Junior Golden Pencil Award" - for school kids who show outstanding early talent in animation.
DRAWTASTIC supports all forms of animation ~ but specifically traditional hand-drawn animation in the USA and beyond!
