What do you want to animate on social media today? Animation is growing more and more popular on social media these days. TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, etc. are all exciting and growing platforms that are increasingly filled with innovative, clever, witty, and sometimes provocative animated content. Social media a great starting place for any aspiring 2D animator to get their work and their ideas out there. So, why not you? Join award-winning traditional 2D animator, author and mentor, Tony White, to learn how to animate your own ideas for social media. It could be that you are already be an animator looking to improve? Or maybe you've never done animation before but want to learn how? If you're either of these, then this short, 6-week course is the perfect place for you!
Zoom classes starts on: Saturday April 8th, 2023. Time: 10:00-am - 12noon* (Pacific Time).

Course requirements: Drawing ability is not essential for this course - although a "love of drawing" is a huge asset! Students may use any animation software or techniques that they are familiar with. However, all lessons will be taught using the versatile and inexpensive Rough Animator software for phones, tablets and desktops. Recommended film editing and compositing software for social media is HitFilm Express, which can be downloaded or free.
How it Works
Once signed-up, you will be given the choice of six unique music tracks to work with. Select the track that most inspires you and come up with an animation idea of your own that will work well with the music. Tony will teach you how to make effective animation for your idea - suitable for posting on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or any other social platform audience you might want to reach. Even better, if you are able to create your own original music track for your project, then you can use that as the basis for your animation, instead of choosing from the six tracks provided.
With your music track decided, Tony will guide you though the entire and proven process that can result in you creating impactful, powerful & effective animation for your idea. At the end of the 6 week course period, you will be capable of animating your own knockout idea and posting it to the social media platform of your own choice!
The processes covered will include story creation, storyboarding, character design, concept art, animatic creation and on to a final animated film. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn animation for one of the top animators in the business, while evolving your own ideas, designs and animation into powerful social media presentations.
As an additional incentive, students successfully completing films in this course could see their films selected for the “DRAWTASTIC Animation Festival” - where a winning film could win for their creator a respected Golden Pencil Award!

Tony White is an accomplished, award-winning, veteran animator and writer of many of the most respected animation books out there. He is also founder of the 2D ACADEMY, and director of the DRAWTASTIC Animation Festival. In his long career he had created over 200 TV commercials for some of the biggest clients around, 2 TV Specials for PBS, several short films – one of which, “HOKUSAI ~ An Animated Sketchbook”, won a British Academy Award. His latest book, “ANIMATION MASTERCLASSES from Pencils to Pixels” is considered the definitive textbooks for animators, teachers and filmmakers alike.

Course Plan:

Week 1
Based on a selected music track, students will conceive their own storyline and then create a storyboard for their film idea. Presentation: Animation styles that are new and innovative. Classwork: Students will complete a final, rough storyboard of their idea. |

Week 2
Students will be introduced to tools, techniques and technologies that can create great social media animated videos. Presentation: Innovative character design and concept art. Classwork: Students will design their characters and create effective environments. |

Week 3
Students will be introduced to drawing for animation exercises, to assist them in creating powerful animated key-frame positions. Presentation: The essential rules of film-making, applied to animation. Classwork: Students will create their final rough-ed out “Key Frame Animatic”. |

Week 4
Students will be introduced to the art of rough inbetweening, as well as the secrets of timing ouit successful movement. Presentation: The making of groundbreaking animation and the techniques used. Classwork: Students will rough inbetween their work and create a final line test. |

Week 5
Students will be shown the process of quick and effective clean-up and coloring in animation. Presentation: Analysis of different animation styles and how they were done. Classwork: Students will clean-up and color their rough animation. |

Week 6
Students will be introduced to ideas in promoting their film through various social media sites, as well as through animation events and/or festivals. Presentation: Post-production technique to enhance and complete your film. Classwork: Students will complete their clean-up and coloring, then present their film, prior to posting it to social media. |
